How to Help Your Cat Cope After Surgery

To help keep your pet healthy after surgery, there are steps you can take to promote his recovery. If your cat is scheduled for surgery at your local pet hospital in San Jose, then keep reading for tips on helping him cope after his procedure. cat - surgery

Be Prepared

Following his surgery, your feline is going to have lower energy levels than usual. Knowing to expect this and allowing your pet some extra rest for a couple of days can help him cope and recover. Also, it’s normal for there to be redness around the surgical site. However, if any redness persists for more than a couple of days, then contact your pet’s veterinarian.

Follow Instructions

When you pick up your cat from the pet hospital after his procedure, you will be given aftercare directions that include how much and when to feed your cat. It’s important to adhere to these instructions to help your cat recover because feeding or watering him too much or too soon may induce nausea or vomiting in your feline.

Be Cautious

To help your cat’s surgical wound heal properly, it’s important to protect it. To do this, avoid contact with the area, whether that be through brushing or petting. Also, the incision should not get wet, so do not bathe your cat as he heals. However, you should keep an eye on the wound and inspect it frequently. Contact your cat’s veterinarian if you notice swelling, discharge, or an opening at the surgery site.

Stay Vigilant

While your cat may act like his normal self within a few days of his procedure, there are additional steps you can take to help him cope as he heals. First, you should keep your pet indoors and limit his activity for a week or so after his procedure. Also, your veterinarian may recommend that you confine your cat to a crate or a small room so you can properly monitor him. Lastly, consider switching to a paper-based cat litter to reduce the chances of infection due to dust.
