San Jose Senior Pet Care

As much as we all wish our dogs could stay cute, curious, and bumbling puppies forever, they will inevitably become seniors, and with seniority comes health problems that can hamper your dog’s quality of living. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take you ensure your dog comfortably enjoys its Golden Years.

Increase the quality of life of your older pet, a top priority should be to keep your dog from becoming overweight, as this can lead to much discomfort during the later years. It is very easy for older dogs to become overweight because they have a slower metabolism and need fewer calories. You can prevent this by giving your dog high-fiber pet food and exercising it at least twice a day for 20 minutes, or just by feeding it less food!

Issues that become more common as our pets get older include arthritis, hearing loss, vision loss, neurologic issues that can affect balance and strength, cancer/tumors, kidney or liver issues, and metabolic problems such as diabetes, addison’s disease, hypothyroidism in dogs and hyperthyroidism in cats.

We recommend regular checkups, and often diagnostic tests such as blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays, and ultrasound exams if needed, to try and find any problems early when they are more easily dealt with. Sometimes exams twice a year can be helpful, to pick up changes or problems early.

New clients are always welcome!
