We firmly believe in yearly wellness exams when pets are young and healthy. Senior animals and pets with ongoing medical problems need more frequent exams. One year of a pet’s life is equivalent to 5-7 human years, which means there can be many changes in 12 months.
Wellness exams can pick up problems when they are small and minor. Nothing may need to be done at the time, but then we have a baseline for monitoring. Some conditions may need to be worked up by doing basic tests such as blood work, urinalysis, x-rays and ultrasound. Many problems will not cause any noticeable changes when they first start. We have found substantially sized tumors on routine physical exams and caught kidney disease on screening blood work!
Annual exams are required before administering vaccines and renewing medications. The Veterinary Medical Board has ruled that in order to prescribe drugs, a current doctor/client-patient relationship must exist. “Current” is defined as no longer than one year. Some pets will need routine lab work as well to make sure we are using safe and appropriate medications.
Wellness exams are good medicine to keep your pet as healthy as possible!
